American Exports preview: Donovan, Howard host Chelsea

AMSTERDAM — There are more interesting matches involving Americans on the weekend schedule than you could wave a pub napkin at, so we're here to help you keep it all straight. All times listed in ET.

Everton vs. Chelsea (Saturday, 10 am on FOX Soccer)

Americans: Landon Donovan, Tim Howard (EVE) – The LA Galaxy loan star will aim for déjà vu: Two years ago Friday, Donovan's assist helped Everton rally to beat the mighty Blues at Goodison. Howard, meanwhile, has two wins and a clean sheet draw on Chelsea's last three EPL visits.

Regardless of locale or competition, matches between the Toffees and Chelsea tend to be nail-biters. Overall, they've each won three and drawn five from the last 11 meetings, with only one of those games decided by more than a goal.

Tottenham vs. Newcastle (Saturday, 12:30 pm on FOX Soccer)

American: Brad Friedel (Spurs) – The American 'keeper has nine wins from 11 games unbeaten at White Hart Lane. Friedel has also not lost a home game against Newcastle since he was between the pipes with Blackburn in 2006.

Spurs, who must do without playmaker Rafael van der Vaart, have five shutout wins from the last seven visits from the Magpies. Newcastle will arrive having won four of five league matches. They have dropped just four of 12 road games all season.

Mainz 05 vs. Hannover 96 (Sunday, 9:30 am)

American: Steve Cherundolo (H96) – The Reds right back will captain the side without suspended back line deputy Emmanuel Pogatetz when the Reds visit picturesque Mainz. Of course, the only sight they have their eyes on is the Europa League slot within reach through victory.

Hannover are unbeaten in four on the road in Bundesliga play and have won on two of the prior three trips to Stadion am Bruchweg. Mainz have posted three three-goal wins and a draw in their last four at home.

Rennes vs. Sochaux (Saturday, 3 pm on FOX Soccer 2Go)

American: Charlie Davies (Sochaux) – The US forward is in the travel squad and should dress for his first Ligue 1 tilt in 14 months. It's been twice as many months since he played for them, but they could certainly use his goals right now.

Sochaux currently sit bottom in France, with their last league win coming more than three months ago. It may not be dire yet, though; they're just two points from the safe zone, held onto their big transfer targets for the rest of the season and have actually won twice in the last five at treacherous Rennes.

Marítimo vs. Sporting CP (Saturday, 1:30 pm)

American: Oguchi Onyewu (SCP) – The US defender returns from suspension likely to reclaim his place against a home side three points off Sporting heels and trying to regain stride. Since the sale of strike ace Baba Diawara to Sevilla last month, Marítimo have three goals and two losses in three matches.

They should expect no quarter from Sporting, who have won five of the last six meetings at The Cauldron. The Lions, currently winless away for four league games, will hope returning is a cure.

Standard Liège vs. Anderlecht (Sunday, 8:30 am)

American: Sacha Kljestan (AND) – A fast and furious string of big matches continues for the Mauves and their midfield navigator as they pay a call on their dreaded Belgian "civil war" archrivals. Kljestan, who found out a few days ago that he will be inducted into the Seton Hall University Hall of Fame, will start in the middle of it all, per usual.

Anderlecht are seven points clear at the top and won the home derby 5-0 earlier this season. Still, they have fallen eight of the previous 10 times at Sclessin.

Bolton (Tim Ream) vs. Wigan - Sat. 10 am, delayed on Fox Soccer Plus at 6 pm

Fulham (Clint Dempsey) vs. Stoke City - Sat. 10 am, delayed on FOX Soccer at 5 pm

Swansea City vs. Norwich City (Zak Whitbread - doubtful) - Sat. 10 am on FOX Soccer 2Go

Augsburg vs. FC Nürnberg (Timothy Chandler) - Sun. 9:30 am

Stuttgart vs. Hertha Berlin (Alfredo Morales) - Sun. 9:30 am

Werder Bremen vs. Hoffenheim (Joseph Gyau, Fabian Johnson, Daniel Williams) - Sun. 9:30 am

The Netherlands:

AZ Alkmaar (Jozy Altidore) vs. Excelsior - Sat. 12:45 pm on

Gent (Mikkel Diskerud) vs. Club Brugge - Sun. noon

Dunfermline vs. Rangers (Alejandro Bedoya, Carlos Bocanegra, Maurice Edu) - Sat. 7 am

Hapoel Ironi Kiryat Shmona (Bryan Gerzicich) vs. Hapoel Be'er Sheva - Sun. 1:50 pm on Israeli Network
