With both sides eyeing the postseason, Colorado and FC Dallas renew their Western Conference rivalry on Saturday night. The Rapids are still looking to punch their ticket to the playoffs after a 1-0 setback against D.C. United in Commerce City last weekend.
Saturday’s match starts a tough three-game gauntlet for the Rapids that sees them face the top three clubs in the Western Conference to end the regular season.
FC Dallas clinched their first playoff spot since 2007 by beating Chicago 3-0 last weekend at Pizza Hut Park. Now they have their sights set on the Supporters’ Shield. FCD have 49 points, just four behind the LA Galaxy for the lead and two behind second-place Real Salt Lake.
All is well in Frisco after the Hoops clinched a playoff spot by shutting out their Brimstone Cup rivals, the Chicago Fire. With his second-half penalty kick, Jeff Cunningham also tied Jaime Moreno for the top spot in career goals in MLS with 132.
FCD were still without a number of starters, but George John is expected to make his return against Colorado. The team now focuses on winning the Supporters' Shield for the first time in their history. A win over the Rapids would make a tight race to the top even tighter.
The Rapids enter this weekend in desperation mode after last Saturday’s shocking home loss to lowly United. Following Saturday’s match, Gary Smith’s side will travel to LA to take on the Galaxy before finally closing out the season at home against Rocky Mountain Cup rivals Real Salt Lake.
Colorado will have to be especially focused on getting a result if they hope to clinch a postseason berth, and they will be looking to make a statement after last weekend’s loss. The Rapids will have to shake off their Frisco hoodoo, as they have a poor record at Pizza Hut Park and FCD have only lost once all year at home.
Heroes and Villains
Dario Sala vs. Omar Cummings and Conor Casey: The veteran FCD goalkeeper has has a career mark of 5-1-3 against Colorado and a goals-against-average of just 0.78. He'll be in goal again this weekend as Kevin Hartman continues to recover from a strained right MCL, and he'll have to remain at his best against arguably the most dangerous strike tandem in MLS – Cummings and Casey have combined for 23 goals this season.
Stat that makes you go “Hmm...”
The Hoops are currently on an 18-game unbeaten streak, tied for longest in a single season. One more game without suffering a loss would set the all-time record and match the all-time undefeated regular-season mark, set by Columbus over the 2002 and '03 seasons.
