Reports out of England in recent weeks have claimed EPL club Manchester City are interested in Los Angeles Galaxy captain and US star Landon Donovan. In a press conference on Wednesday ahead of the Barclays New York Challenge, City manager Roberto Mancini did not rule out the club’s interest.
"The market is open until the end of August, but it could be possible because Donovan is a good player,” Mancini said.
However, last week, MLS Commissioner Don Garber indicated that the league would not consider bids for the most recognizable American soccer player.
"He's become a real soccer hero," Garber said. "MLS needs soccer heroes, and we have a great American soccer hero playing for us in LA, holding the torch for the sport in our country, and that's very important."
Man. City’s participation in the four-team Barclays New York Challenge is their biggest foray into the US market to date. Commissioner Garber met with City executives in March regarding their US strategy, and the club has also recently launched a website targeted toward the American fan, mcfc.com.
