Mets third baseman Wright a Donovan fan

By now it's no big surprise that the drama of the US national team's World Cup campaign has caused a stir among all sports fans across the nation.

But the interest is also reaching a fever pitch among athletes in America's other professional sports, too.

Following the US's big win over Algeria on Wednesday, goalkeeper Tim Howard turned on his TV and spotted New York Mets third baseman David Wright wearing a Landon Donovan jersey.

"I guess he went out and bought a Landon Donovan jersey a couple of weeks back, and he wore it yesterday," Howard told the Associated Press on Thursday. "That's pretty cool, when you see guys like that in other sports, high-level athletes who you respect, getting involved and enjoying our team and our success."

"Landon scored," he continued. "Their first pitch I think wasn't long after that. His Landon jersey was in the clubhouse, and I'm sure it made him feel good.

"It was almost like he predicted it by wearing the shirt, and I'm sure a lot of his boys in the clubhouse didn't know exactly what it was."

The Mets went on to earn a big win of their own on Wednesday, defeating the Detroit Tigers, 5-0.
