Toronto City Council today approved the proposal to convert BMO Field to natural grass. This decision secures the second step in a four-party approval process and was arguably the biggest hurdle the proposal faced.
"Biggest issue was ensuring that we delivered our commitment to the community," said MLSE Executive Vice President of Venues, Bob Hunter. "That was the highest level of sensitivity that we had to address."
The natural grass-solution at BMO Field creates "nearly 35% more availability for the community" according to Hunter, once the plan is fully implemented.
The plan will now be scrutinized at the provincial and federal levels as early as this week. Hunter noted that the "province has done its analysis, to the best of our knowledge, it is supportive."
