Chivas USA signs Wicky to new contract

Ahead of the official opening of preseason this Wednesday, Chivas USA announced Monday that it has signed midfielder Raphaël Wicky, a Swiss International and World Cup veteran, to a new contract for this, his second season in Major League Soccer. Per league and team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.

"Raphaël is a talented player with great experience and a good soccer brain. Last year was tough for him with his injury, but we are happy to have him back. We are confident he can continue to help Chivas USA in 2009," said Chivas USA Head Coach Preki Radosaljevic.

A native of Steg, Switzerland, Wicky, 31, has over a decade's professional experience in Germany, Spain and Switzerland, including participation in the UEFA Champions League. Wicky has also amassed over 70 international appearances for the Swiss National Team, including as a starter at the 2004 European Championships and the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.

Wicky joined Chivas USA prior to the 2008 season from FC Sion in his native Switzerland, but was limited to five MLS appearances due to an ankle injury, for which he underwent surgery on July 16. On Sept. 15, Wicky was placed on Chivas USA's Season-Ending Injury List.

Chivas USA kicks off its fifth campaign in Major League Soccer when its hosts the Colorado Rapids in an Opening Day match on Saturday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center. For more information on Chivas USA season tickets, please call 1-877-CHIVAS-1 or visit cdchivasusa.com.
