Chivas Update: Ready for SuperDraft

CHIVAS USA GEARS UP FOR 2009 MLS SUPERDRAFT ON THURSDAY:

The Chivas USA coaching staff is on hand in St. Louis as it gets set for the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, where the Red-and-White own picks in the first two rounds for the first time since the team's inaugural SuperDraft in 2005. In the first round, Chivas USA is scheduled to select 9th overall; team also owns the 4th pick in the second round (19th overall). Previous first-round picks in Chivas USA history include goalkeeper Brad Guzan (2005) the team's first-ever SuperDraft selection, and midfielder Sacha Kljestan (2006), Chivas USA's reigning team MVP. Although Chivas USA has traded its third and fourth round spots in this year's draft, the Red-and-White's two picks is one more than in 2008, when the team selected midfielder Keith Savage (4th round) as its only draftee. More information on the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, including an official Draft Tracker, can be found at MLSnet.com. Fans can also tune in to ESPN2 to watch live coverage of the first round of the draft starting at 11:00 a.m. PT on Thursday.

This is Kennedy's first participation in a U.S. National Team camp, coming after the Yorba Linda native posted a 1.03 GAA (goals-against average) in 9 games (8 starts) with Chivas USA during the 2008 MLS season. The U.S. is training in preparation for a friendly match on Jan. 24 against Sweden, also at The Home Depot Center, prior to its Feb. 11 CONCACAF World Cup Qualifier against Mexico in Columbus. With a dramatic 4-2 win on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation, Chivas de Guadalajara captured its first InterLiga title at The Home Depot Center on Sunday. The win qualifies the team for the Copa Libertadores, South America's biggest club competition, for the fourth time in five years. Chivas USA's sister club was the only squad in the eight-team tournament to finish undefeated, and Guadalajara's record earned it first place in the annual InterLiga, which ran from Jan. 2-11 in Dallas, Houston, and Los Angeles.
