SEPTEMBER 13, 2008 - SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES 1, HOUSTON DYNAMO 1
SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH FRANK YALLOP
On the game:
"It was a fair and a really good game tonight. Both teams came out to do the right thing and try to score and from a fan point of view I thought they enjoyed the match. Obviously getting one point is good. I think it was a pretty even game for both teams. We have to move on and try to get something down in Houston next week."
On the physical nature of match:
"I thought we handled the physical side of the game great. We can't go into the match and expect to come and play our game, we have to fight and I thought we did that tonight. We matched them physically and if you do that you have a chance to play against Houston. If you don't match them they will run all over you and beat you."
On the team's courage:
"We were not lucky to come out with a point, we fought hard to get that point and I think it was important for us to know that we can do that. You have seen a team grow over the season into a team that is committed and wants to win and I think that is very important. Tonight was a good example that we wanted to win badly and every play was a fight and that was good."
EARTHQUAKES CAPTAIN NICK GARCIA
Assessing Quakes' current situation:
"We got seven points in our last three games at home, which is pretty good. If we can go to Houston next week and get at least a point, we will continue to be in good position for a playoff spot. We are looking forward to next week. It is not going to be easy, but we will be ready and I am sure they will be also."
EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER RONNIE O'BRIEN
"It was a tough game tonight. I think that it was a pretty fair result; we had some chances, they had some chances. We can't be too upset with the result. The other results in the league went our way tonight, so it wasn't too bad for us to drop some points at home against a good team."
On Houston's goal:
"We were matched up pretty well in the box, two of us on two of them, but the ball took a deflection and landed right on his head. That was tough, but they had some other chances, so you have to say 1-1 was a fair result."
On his goal:
"The ball just rolled nicely for me and I caught it sweetly and hit it to the far post. That is about as well as I can hit one."
DYNAMO HEAD COACH DOMINIC KINNEAR
"The two teams are very competitive. The game started off fine and the atmosphere was electric. They were not shying away from any challenges and neither were we. They made it tough for us to play. I thought it was a fair result."
On returning to play the Earthquakes:
"Friendship was definitely pushed aside, and it was very competitive. I know there were handshakes tonight instead of hugs, so that shows what these two teams were feeling. The guys were motivated from the first time we played out here. Even with some different players on both sides, the competitive nature was still very high."
DYNAMO FORWARD BRIAN CHING
On Earthquakes' play:
"Those guys came out with a lot to prove tonight, trying to step out of our shadow in a sense. But they came out and they fought hard. That's what you expect."
"That's the theme of our team, we don't give up; we fight. We knew it was going to be a battle from the start, it came out that way, and we just kept fighting. We had our chances, they had their chances and I think 1-1 is a pretty fair result tonight."
