"Be ready in the moment." That's the advice all goalscorers have to live by.
That's because in the pro game, the ball moves fast, and gaps close quickly, and goalkeepers will read every single bit of your plant foot, how open your hips are and the angle you're going to goal at. The margin for error gets smaller and smaller and smaller.
Diego Fagundez seems to have the gift for always being ready in those moments, thus giving his opponent less of a chance to read his intents -- and thus, less of a chance to stop him. He's quick and ruthless in the final third and has become a willing and clever defender as well.
What the technical staffers say: "He’s an interesting guy. He’s slippery and he’s clever and he’s really good around the goal. Sometimes you need to teach young players that they don’t need much room to finish plays, but that’s what Diego’s already figured out. A lot of his finishes aren’t things that wow you, but he makes things look so easy because of that ability, and he doesn't give you the time to make up for any mistakes."
What Opta Sports says: Diego Fagundez has now scored at least five goals in each of the last three seasons. In 2013, he scored 13, which led the Revolution that year and is the most in MLS history by a teenager.
