Go back to the first game of the season and watch what the Seattle Sounders did to Andrew Farrell. Now fast forward to last week, and watch what Farrell did to the New York Red Bulls.
The kid has learned a ton in the past six months, and that ability to absorb new information and adapt is one of the key traits for any player in any spot, but it's especially crucial for defenders. If you're on the back line, you have to treat every goal conceded as a learning experience and store that information away in an attempt to prevent being punished in the same way a second time.
Farrell's done that all season, which is one of the reasons the Revs might be the Eastern Conference favorites.
What the technical staffers say: "He changed spots this year, and he's playing at a high level still, so you know he understands the game. I think he’s got savviness that all great defenders have. For a young defender in this league, he’s probably got more savviness than any of them. It comes from confidence and the ability to see plays and read plays quickly.
"Between him being smart, being savvy, being athletic, being aware, I think he's pretty damn good. I don't like it when we play him."
What Opta Sports says: Andrew Farrell ranks seventh in MLS with 161 clearances this season. He ranks first among eligible players for 24 under 24 with 87 interceptions.
