World Cup: England officially eliminated after Costa Rica win over Italy

Goodbye, Three Lions.

England are the latest former World Cup champions to get knocked out of the 2014 World Cup, as Costa Rica's 1-0 win over Italy on Friday doomed the English to crash out following the second Group D matchday.

The English, who lost to Italy and to Uruguay in their first two group games, now have a dead-rubber game left to play in Brazil against the Ticos, who have shocked the world in not only clinching a place in the round of 16 but who also lead Group D at the moment.

Initial reports have it that head coach Roy Hodgson will remain in the job despite the performance in the tournament.

The group stage exit is England's first since 1958, and given the current 32-team format, it will be their worst-ever placing at a World Cup tournament (England finished 13th overall in 2010).

Other teams to be eliminated so far are defending champions Spain, as well as Cameroon and Australia.
