Jermain Defoe may well be among England's 23-man squad in Brazil this summer, but it will take a break or two for manager Roy Hodgson to call the Toronto FC striker's number.

Hodgson named his squad for the 2014 World Cup on Monday, releasing the 23 names set to be available for England's June 14 opener against Italy as well as the seven players who will make up the standby list. Along with West Ham's Andy Carroll, Defoe is one of two forwards listed as a standby while Rickie Lambert, Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck make up the first-choice striker group.

Defoe has three goals in four regular seasons starts for Toronto FC this season after signing with the club as a Designated Player in January. He also scored in the club's 2-1 Amway Canadian Championship victory against the Vancouver Whitecaps last Wednesday.

England will begin preparations for the tournament next week in Portugal before returning to London to take on Peru at Wembley on May 30. They'll head to Miami from there, with two more matches scheduled against Honduras and Ecuador before making their way to Brazil.
