World Cup: Youth phenom Julian Green invited to train with USMNT ahead of Ukraine friendly
Bayern Munich youth phenom Julian Green has been invited to train with the US men's national team ahead of their March 5 friendly against Ukraine, U.S. Soccer has confirmed to MLSsoccer.com.
As first reported by Ives Galarcep, Green, who is eligible to represent both the United States and Germany internationally, has been invited to spend two days training with the USMNT in Frankfurt, Germany, prior to the team's trip to Kharkiv, Ukraine for the match.
A U.S. Soccer spokesperson later confirmed the invite to MLSsoccer.com, noting that Green would would not travel to Ukraine with the team. The 18-year-old winger would have to file a one-time change of association with FIFA in order to feature in a game for the USMNT, a move that would permanently tie his international allegiance to the US.
Ealier Friday, USMNT assistant coach Andreas Herzog took in a Bayern Munich training session and "caught up" with Green, who made his first-team debut for the Bavarian giants in a Champions League match against CSKA Moscow in November:
The Tampa-born Green, the son of an American father and German mother spurned a training invitation by US boss Jurgen Klinsmann last November to instead join the German U-19 camp for two friendlies. In the past, he has represented both the US and Germany at various youth levels.
