USMNT: Jozy Altidore awarded Futbol de Primera 2013 Player of the Year

Jozy Altidore has been awarded by Futbol de Primera 2013 Player of the Year, the organization announced on Tuesday.

The award, in its 23rd year, is given to a US national team member and selected by journalists from across the country. It is the first time Altidore has received the honor.

For Altidore, it was a coming-out of sorts. The 24-year-old, after going throuh struggles at both the club and national level, broke out under the tutelage of Jurgen Klinsmann for the national team, beginning with a goal and an assist against Germany June 2, and later netting a hat trick against World Cup-bound Bosnia-Herzegovina on Aug. 14.

Landon Donovan has been awarded the most, receiving the honor seven times (2002-04, 2007-10). Clint Dempsey had received the honor the previous two years, as well as in 2006.
