Jozy Altidore has been awarded by Futbol de Primera 2013 Player of the Year, the organization announced on Tuesday.

The award, in its 23rd year, is given to a US national team member and selected by journalists from across the country. It is the first time Altidore has received the honor.

For Altidore, it was a coming-out of sorts. The 24-year-old, after going throuh struggles at both the club and national level, broke out under the tutelage of Jurgen Klinsmann for the national team, beginning with a goal and an assist against Germany June 2, and later netting a hat trick against World Cup-bound Bosnia-Herzegovina on Aug. 14.

Landon Donovan has been awarded the most, receiving the honor seven times (2002-04, 2007-10). Clint Dempsey had received the honor the previous two years, as well as in 2006.
