WFC: América legend Zague chimes in on MLS conversation

SAN FRANCISCO — Already this week, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and forward Wayne Rooney, as well as Real Madrid boss José Mourinho, forward Cristiano Ronaldo and goalkeeper Iker Casillas have lauded MLS and the level of play.

On Friday, Mexico great Luis Roberto Alves “Zague,” who sits sixth on the list of El Tri’s all-time top scorers with 30 goals, added his name to the list.

The Club América legend, who scored 162 goals for the team with whom he spent the majority of his career, was at the Águilas’ final practice on Friday before facing Manchester City on Saturday at AT&T Park (8 pm ET, TeleFutura) in the Herbalife World Football Challenge and hailed the pace at which Major League Soccer is growing.

“It’s a league that I think has experienced growth based on order, on planning, on the projection it has had for many years,” he told MLSsoccer.com.

Zague, who worked for many years as a journalist after retiring from soccer, was recently named América’s sporting vice president, and he believes MLS’ growth will be mutually beneficial for the US and Mexico.

“It’s good to see that [MLS is growing] because [the US is] a very important market, especially for Mexico because of its proximity,” Zague said. “Constant showdowns between [American and Mexican teams] will always be important for their growth.”
