WFC: Chelsea to face Paris St. Germain at Yankee Stadium
Europe's heavyhitters are coming to the home of the Bronx Bombers.
English giants Chelsea FC will face French powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain in the first soccer match ever at the new Yankee Stadium -- home field of Major League Baseball's New York Yankees -- on July 22 (7 pm ET).
Tickets will go on sale on Wednesday, May 16.
The match will mark the second of three for Chelsea as part of the World Football Challenge. It will be PSG's only WFC game.
Chelsea, of course, are coming off this past weekend's thrilling 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the FA Cup final. More importantly, they have advanced to the final of the UEFA Champions League, in which they will take on Bayern Munich, on May 19 at the Allianz Arena.
PSG, coached by former Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti, have had an impressive resurgence this season and are battling for the Ligue 1 title. With just two matches to go, the two-time Ligue 1 champions are neck and neck with Montpellier.
"Chelsea Football Club is delighted to be heading to New York after such a long time away, and it will be a real pleasure to visit Yankee Stadium for what is sure to be a competitive game," Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay said in a statement. "Paris St Germain represents a true test for us in our preparations for the new season. We know Carlo well and respect the superb job he did for us, and continues to do in France. It should be a fantastic game."
The match will take place just three days before Chelsea square off with the best of MLS in the 2012 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at PPL Park.
