SoCal trialists hope to reach Final Event in Sueño MLS

BELL GARDENS, Calif. — Once again Sueño MLS 2012 - presented by Allstate continued its search for talent, but this time there were only 30 players to see.

While Chivas USA Youth Academy scouts watched the Day 2 qualifiers take part scrimmages one player stood out: James Camacho, a goalkeeper from Riverside, California.

Camacho, 16, raised eyebrows not only for his striking resemblance to Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, but also for his astonishing shot-stopping skills. A onetime state champion in high school, he conceded a few goals over the weekend, but that didn’t worry him much.

“I was very impressed by the great players at today’s tryouts and throughout the weekend,” Camacho told MLSsoccer.com. “It just shows how much talent there is in Southern California. I don’t think being scored on is going to hurt my chances. I tried my best and did what I know how to do on the field and I think that’s what matters most.”

Another standout was 17-year-old defender Alejandro Nuñez, who not only plays soccer for Granada Hills Charter High School but is also part of its varsity football team. But Nuñez was quick to assure everyone that only one sport really captures his imagination.

“Soccer is all I think of every single day and I play every chance I get,” he told MLSsoccer.com. “When there is not a ball in front of me, I’m thinking about it.”

Every Sueño MLS – presented by Allstate weekend trial has featured visits from local soccer celebrities. On Saturday, the young trialists were visited by Chivas USA midfielder Jorge Villafaña, who was the Sueño MLS 2007 winner. On Sunday, Villafaña’s teammate Alejandro Moreno showed up. The Venezuela international pointed out the unique qualities required to make it in the pro ranks.

“To be a professional soccer player not only takes skill with the ball but sacrifice and a lot of it,” Moreno said. “Education is important, a must. When your friends are out partying, you should be studying, and when they are on vacation, you should be training.”

Watch Univision's Republica Deportiva on Sunday, May 5, to find out which trialists from LA reached the Final Event.
