One of the overriding talking points surrounding Toronto FC's newest Designated Player Jermain Defoe's move to MLS — at least among foreign media, namely in the UK — goes a little something like this:

Defoe, a 31-year-old striker with over 150 goals scored in his professional career, has effectively killed any hope of making England's 23-man squad for this summer's World Cup in Brazil by moving to a lesser league than the English Premier League.

Furthermore, Defoe will suddenly forget how to score goals — something he has done non-stop since he turned professional with West Ham at age 16 — in the two-plus months between the time he makes his MLS debut (March 15) and when England manager Roy Hodgson names his World Cup squad (sometime around the end of May).

That seems a bit over the top and extreme, doesn't it? Defoe responded to the English critics on Tuesday following his official TFC unveiling.

Can Defoe still make England's World Cup squad while playing in MLS during the run-up to the World Cup? More importantly, should he? Tell us in the poll above, and share your thoughts in the comments below.
