Rapper Drake has built up "personal relationship" with new Toronto FC DP Jermain Defoe | SIDELINE
So really, Drake, the people want to know: Are you actually helping Toronto FC land players?
The megastar rapper and Toronto native is an "ambassador" for Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, the conglomerate that owns TFC as well as the NBA's Raptors and NHL's Maple Leafs.
What exactly does that entail? Well, beyond help possibly to rebrand the Raptors, the cultural icon may have some sway influencing the MLS club's ability to land some big names. Like newly signed Jermain Defoe.
Drake had this to say to the Toronto Sun on Sunday:
“I don’t know if I had an influence on him coming here. I think that all I did was give him the necessary information about a city he didn’t know much about. I told him how great it’s been to me, and how great I assumed it would be to him. We had a great conversation. We built up a personal relationship. I’m excited to see him begin his career here. I just do what I can. [MLSE president Tim Leiweke] is the boss. It’s all Tim, really. I was just a piece of the puzzle, I guess.”
False modesty? You be the judge. Drake certainly isn't afraid to hang with TFC's current players, either.
