One of Real Salt Lake’s top forwards could be bound for Brazil’s Serie A, as Ives Galarcep is reporting that they’re in advanced discussions with Atletico Mineiro about the transfer of Jefferson Savarino.

Primarily a winger, Savarino has recorded 21 goals and 21 assists through 82 regular-season matches. He also has one goal in five Audi MLS Cup Playoff games, all since arriving in 2017 on loan from Venezuelan club Zulia.

On the international stage, the 23-year-old Designated Player has one goal in 14 appearances for Venezuela. After the 2019 Copa America last summer, reports surfaced that Premier League sides West Ham United and Newcastle United were interested in Savarino’s services.

Should Mineiro be Savarino’s outgoing destination, it would mark the second time the Brazilians did business with an MLS club this winter. Back on Jan. 2, Yimmi Chara was signed from Mineiro by the Portland Timbers as a Designated Player.

This offseason, RSL have already lost a key wide player in Brooks Lennon, who was traded to Atlanta United in exchange for $150,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) and $150,000 in Targeted Allocation Money (TAM). RSL also signed Corey Baird to a long-term deal that keeps him with the team for the next four seasons.
