Real Salt Lake and midfielder Kyle Beckerman have agreed to a new contract, the club announced Monday. The club legend returns for his 21st MLS season and 14th with RSL.

Beckerman, 37, is the leagueā€™s career leader in MLS regular-season games played (488), games started (456) and minutes played (40,772) among field players. He's a nine-time MLS All-Star and helped lead the club to lifting MLS Cup in 2009.

ā€œOver the last 13 seasons, Utah has been home for me and Iā€™m proud of Real Salt Lakeā€™s role on and off the field in building the soccer community here,ā€ Beckerman said in a statement. ā€œThe fans have welcomed me from day one and I am eager to get back on the field for another season with RSL because there is still so much more to accomplish. I know I have a role to play in reaching those goals for myself and the club.ā€

Beckerman remained a key player for the club last season, making 24 starts as the club finished third in the Western Conference. The defensive midfielder even delivered five assists, his most since 2013.

A former US international, Beckerman made 57 appearances for his country between 2007-16.

ā€œKyle Beckerman is a club legend and an iconic player in the history of this organization and league,ā€ RSL GM Elliot Fall said.  ā€œWeā€™re thrilled to have him back for 2020. Heā€™s a leader on the field and in the locker room and a special person for this club.ā€

He figures to be a regular in RSL's midfield once again, in a deep group alongside Everton LuizDamir Kreilach and others.

RSL had already seen one legend depart this offseason, as goalkeeper Nick Rimando retired. The club open 2020 on February 29 against Orlando City SC
