D.C. United have acquired Peru international winger Edison Flores from Liga MX's Monarcas Morelia for an undisclosed transfer fee, the club announced Tuesday. Flores will occupy a Designated Player slot.

Flores, 25, had 12 goals and six assists in 47 matches with Morelia. He was a key member of the Morelia side that finished seventh in the just-completed 2019 Liga MX Apertura and advanced to the Liguilla (playoffs) semifinals.

The Athletic and The Washington Post both report that D.C. paid a $5 million transfer fee and Flores' contract is in the neighborhood of $2 million per year over five years including options.

"We are excited to add an international player of Edison's pedigree to the team ahead of the 2020 season," D.C. GM Dave Kasper said in a statement. "He is an exciting and dynamic attacking player who creates and scores goals. What has really impressed us is his commitment to the team... he is a versatile and gritty two-way player who plays with a real pulse. Edison is a proven international player with Peru and was a major contributor for them in the 2018 World Cup and in their impressive run to the final in the Copa America."

A quick, elusive attacker who can create from both wide and central areas, he’s also been a regular in the Peru national team, scoring 13 goals for Los Incas, logging heavy minutes during the 2018 World Cup and helping them reach the final of the 2019 Copa America.

After breaking through at Universitario de Deportes in Chile, Flores had a stint with Villarreal B in Spain as well as Denmark's Aalborg BK before joining Morelia. The Liga MX club has done business with MLS in recent years, as it's the club where the Seattle Sounders bought Raul Ruidiaz from.

D.C. are undergoing a transformative offseason. After losing attackers Wayne Rooney, Lucho Acosta and Lucas Rodriguez, the club have worked to fill the void with by signing Yamil Asad and Ola Kamara over the summer and now Flores. United have been rumored for the likes of Brian Lozano, Luka Modric and other big names.

With Flores and Paul Arriola, the club have used two of their DP spots, thus have one remaining should they choose to fill it.
