Report: Avaya Stadium to host US-Honduras World Cup qualifier

The San Jose Earthquakesā€™ Avaya Stadium will host the US menā€™s national teamā€™s crucial World Cup qualifier against Honduras on March 24, ESPNā€™s Doug McIntyre reported on Thursday.

The match will be the USā€™s first competitive game since Bruce Arena took over as head coach for Jurgen Klinsmann in November.

US Soccer announced on Wednesday that the USMNT will play their first match of 2017 on Jan. 29, when theyā€™ll take on Serbia in a friendly at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. McIntyre reported on Thursday that the US, who will convene in Southern California for a camp in January, will play another exhibition match on Feb. 3, with the location and opponent to be announced at a later date.

The US will be looking to rebound from their poor start to qualifying against Honduras. The Americans are 0-2-0 in the Hexagonal round of CONCACAF qualifying after losses to Mexico and at Costa Rica, defeats that precipitated Klinsmannā€™s firing. Honduras went 1-1-0 in their first two Hex matches, losing 1-0 at home to Panama before winning 3-1 at home against Trinidad & Tobago.

Following the Honduras match, the US will travel to Panama for a qualifier on March 28. Panama are currently tied for second with Mexico in the six-team Hexagonal after going 1-0-1 in their first two matches.

Avaya Stadium seats 18,000, opened in 2015 and hosted the 2016 MLS All-Star Game.
