2016 MLS Cup becomes 4th all-time to go to PK shootout

Steven Beitashour - Joevin Jones - MLS Cup - Toronto FC - Seattle Sounders

The 2016 MLS Cup between Toronto FC and the Seattle Sounders was the 10th in MLS league history to go to extra time, and the fourth to go to a penalty shootout, which Seattle won, after the teams played to a scoreless draw at BMO Field on Saturday.

The game was the first in MLS Cup history to finish 0-0 through 120 minutes.

Three of the previous nine MLS Cups that went to extra time (2006, 2009, 2013) were decided by a penalty shootout. The only other MLS Cup to take place at BMO Field, 2010's final between the Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas, also went to extra time.

It's the fourth MLS Cup to remain 0-0 through regulation, alongside the 2002, 2005, and 2006 editions. The first two were won by the LA Galaxy, with the Houston Dynamo winning in 2006 (curiously, the New England Revolution were on the losing side in all three of those encounters).
