Toronto FC head coach Greg Vanney: 2016 will be "biggest MLS Cup to date"

MLS Cup trophy

Toronto FC head coach Greg Vanney has been here before – plenty of times.

The former LA Galaxy defender played in three MLS Cups, including the inaugural edition in 1996, as a rookie. Suffice to say, he knows a thing or two about MLS Cup. And he thinks MLS Cup 2016 will be the biggest edition ever.

"It's exponentially bigger," Vanney said of this year's final compared to the inaugural championship game, which Vanney's Galaxy lost to D.C. United, 3-2. "I also think, just in general, this will be the biggest MLS Cup, yet, to date. Obviously, two countries are represented with teams, and two of the major market teams, in terms of fan support, media support, all those kinds of things. So I think this'll be, in terms of coverage and attention – I think it'll probably be the biggest MLS Cup that we've seen so far.

"There's far more events, there's far more hoopla going around it, there's much more attention than there was back then,'' Vanney continued. "It's the way the league has grown, which is wonderful to see, and that's the way it should be. We're looking forward to being part of it; for us, as I've said all week, the game is the most important, but I think the events surrounding it and the amount of talk and communication media that's covering this, it's special. It's great to see in this league."
