FC Dallas technical director Fernando Clavijo

Ahead of tonight’s World Cup qualifier between the US and Mexico in Columbus (7:45 pm ET; FS1, Univision), Sam Borden of The New York Times wrote an excellent piece on the difficult, far-reaching choice that faces every young soccer prospect on the US-Mexico border: Which country should I play in?

The piece really is wonderfully done – you should go read it. It also features a bit of an MLS connection, as it highlights FC Dallas' academy, their affiliate club in El Paso, Texas, and the pitch they make to keep talented youngsters from decamping to Mexican teams.
