Transfer Watch: Could the LA Galaxy be targeting Wayne Rooney?

Wayne Rooney - Manchester United - Action shot, jumps for ball

The latest rumor out of the British tabloids has the LA Galaxy replacing one English legend with another.

According to a report in The Sun, the Galaxy are targeting Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney as a potential replacement for midfielder Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard, 36, is one of three DPs on the Galaxy roster along with Robbie Keane and Gio dos Santos. According to The Sun, the Galaxy are preparing for the possibility that Gerrard could either retire or leave the club at the end of the season, and have reportedly begun asking advisors how much Rooney would cost.

Rooney, 31, has struggled for playing time this year at Manchester United under new manager Jose Mourinho. The England national teamer has started just five of United’s nine matches this year and was not on the gameday roster for their 1-0 win against Manchester City in the English League Cup on Wednesday.

LA, who beat Real Salt Lake 3-1 in a Knockout Round match on Wednesday night, will host the Colorado Rapids in the first leg of their Western Conference semifinal series on Sunday (5 pm ET; ESPN in the US, TSN1/4 in Canada). It remains to be seen whether or not Gerrard, who missed LA’s win against RSL due to injury, will be available for selection on Sunday.
