Reports: Dynamo pick Cabrera as Barrett will not return as head coach

Head coach Wade Barrett - Houston Dynamo - looks on vs. D.C. United

UPDATE: FourFourTwo USA's Paul Tenorio reported via Twitter on Thursday morning that Houston have selected former Chivas USA coach Wilmer Cabrera as the Dynamo's next head coach, a de facto promotion from his current role in charge of their USL affiliate, Rio Grande Valley FC. Cabrera also previously served as a Colorado Rapids assistant and the head coach of the US Under-17 national team.

Wade Barrett will not be returning to the Houston Dynamo as head coach, according to multiple reports on Wednesday night.

A former Dynamo player and an assistant coach for the club since 2010, Barrett replaced Owen Coyle when the latter departed on May 25 and then was officially given the interim head coaching role on June 7. He went on to lead the club to a 4-7-9 record, but it was not enough to get the team into the playoffs, as they finished last in the West and 12 points out of the sixth and final playoff spot.

According to the same reports, the club has offered Barrett a technical role with the club, but the former Dynamo captain has yet to make a final decision.

"We're not really making this about Wade and what he did or didn't do," Canetti told the Houston Chronicle. "This is about where we're at as a club and what we need going forward. It is a timing thing.

"We need an experienced coach and we need to change," Canetti continued. "The status quo isn't going to work. We feel like we need to infuse new thoughts, new ideas and new energy to take us to where we need to be."

FOX Houston sports reporter Mark Berman tweeted that the head coach of the Dynamo's USL affiliate Rio Grande Valley FC Toros, Wilmer Cabrera, "is a serious candidate" for the job. Cabrera coached Chivas USA in MLS for one season in 2014.
