Soccer Power Index: Union all but officially in, wild West up for grabs

Philadelphia Union rookies Keegan Rosenberry and Fabian Herbers hug at 2016 SuperDraft

The East is all but sealed. The West is totally up for grabs.

But just what are the chances of each contending team to clinch a berth in the playoffs on Decision Day?

ESPN stat maven Paul Carr crunched the numbers, releasing them as part of his Soccer Power Index projections on Monday:

As you can see, things don’t exactly look good for New England. The Revs currently trail Philadelphia by three points for the East’s final playoff spot, but would need to win on Sunday, have the Union lose and make up a huge margin in 12-goal margin in goal difference in order to qualify for the playoffs.

Things are significantly tighter out West, where Real Salt Lake, Seattle Sounders, Sporting Kansas City and Portland Timbers are battling for three playoff spots. SPI gives Seattle, Salt Lake and SKC a great shot at advancing, but don’t count out Portland just yet – they’ll be in with a win at Vancouver.
