Bonus Points: Watch out for yellow-card suspensions in Fantasy home stretch

Luke Boden - Orlando City - receiving a yellow card from referee Armando Villarreal

Oh, Nicolas Lodeiro. I had just finished singing your praises, and then you go and get a completely avoidable yellow card in Round 31 and screw up my double-game week plans. I even had you captained. What could have been…

I have to say, I’m not even mad – I’m rather impressed that Lodeiro managed to earn five yellow cards in only 10 Major League Soccer matches. But I’m even more surprised that he’s not at the top of the list for most yellow cards per 90 minutes played.

Amusingly, his penchant for going into the referee’s book is actually allowing him to play a game for the Seattle Sounders that he would have otherwise missed, as he is now suspended for the Uruguayan national team's next match and will be available for the Sounders’ game against the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday (10:30 pm ET; MLS LIVE).

This week, I’m going to take a look at everyone on the disciplinary report that is in danger of missing a match if they receive one more yellow card, and we’ll see how good (or bad, depending on your perspective) they are at picking up cautions. I’ll be avoiding most of those players when we have our free wildcard in Round 33, so that I’m not forced to make any transfers due to yellow-card accumulation suspension in Round 34, the final round for Fantasy MLS.

These players will be suspended for their next game, so steer clear of them for now. Sam Cronin, Brad Evans and Alex will be available on Round 33 since they still have another match to play this round, and the rest won’t be available until Round 34.

All of these players are one yellow card away from suspension. Out of the players that have seen significant playing time, Luciano Acosta ($8.7), Jordan Stewart ($6.6), RJ Allen ($5.3), Lucas Ontivero ($7.6), Sunny ($6.8) and Rob Vincent ($5.6) have all picked up yellow cards at a pace of more than one per three games played, so be careful with these guys.

Didier Drogba ($11.8) and Axel Sjoberg ($6.3) are two to look out for that may be on fantasy managers’ teams down the stretch. They haven’t been as likely to receive cautions, but they’re both one silly foul away from missing out on Round 34.

Osvaldo Alonso ($9.5) is the only player on the list capable of guaranteeing his safety from a yellow-card accumulation suspension in Round 34, but that’s only if he doesn’t receive any disciplinary action at home against Houston on Wednesday.

The highest yellow cards per 90 minutes played award goes to: Conor Doyle. He’s earned two yellow cards in only 23 minutes played, which would be a rate of 7.83 yellow cards per 90 minutes. Impressive!
