Bonus Points: Who’s scoring points, even without scoring goals?

Osvaldo Alonso - Seattle Sounders

I’ve harped on it before, and I’ll harp on it again: bonus points are essential for a good MLS Fantasy team. Even the hottest player is going to have games where he doesn’t score, but attacking and defending bonus points can turn a one-assist night for Nicolás Lodeiro into a 13-point performance:

Bonus Points: Who’s scoring points, even without scoring goals? - https://league-mp7static.mlsdigital.net/images/lodeiro-card.png

This week’s Bonus Points is going to take a look at the last six rounds (Rounds 24-29), to find the players that have scored the most bonus points per 90 minutes played and have participated in at least 50% of their team’s matches.

There isn’t a huge difference among the top 10 goalkeepers, but it is good to keep in mind that Andre Blake ($5.1) and Tim Howard ($6.6) both missed time for international duty. That’s something that you will have to prepare for in Rounds 31 and 32. Blake, Luis Robles ($6.4), and Josh Saunders ($5.1) lead the pack at 1.6 bonus points per 90 minutes.

Alvas Powell ($7.4) leads the defenders in recent bonus points with 2.8 per 90 minutes, but not far behind are Raul Rodriguez ($8.4) and Joao Meira ($7.7). Both Rodriguez and Meira have matches in Round 32, where there will only be six MLS teams available for selection. That said, the money required to gain the extra one or two bonus points for these expensive defenders may be better spent on midfielders or forwards.

Surprisingly, defensive midfielders Matias Laba ($7.2) and Osvaldo Alonso ($9.2) both make the top three, due almost exclusively to their defensive bonus point generation. Alonso could be a great option for the next four weeks, since the Seattle Sounders have a double-game week in Round 31, followed by a home match against the Houston Dynamo in Round 32. Razvan Cocis ($6.9) is another option for the limited Round 32 selection, as he has been quietly producing solid points these last few weeks and has a double-game week followed by a home match against Columbus Crew SC.

A sneaky pick would be Alex Lima ($5.9) – with a cheap price tag and a double-game week in Round 32, he’s worth stashing on your bench to use as an insurance policy in case our least favorite player shows up in your Starting XI: 'Undisclosed Injury'.

No forward has been more involved in bonus point generation than D.C. United’s Luciano Acosta ($8.8). Unfortunately, D.C. United have a bye in Round 32, as well as many of the top forwards on this list, so you’ll have to look elsewhere for players that are going to be around a few weeks.

Ola Kamara ($8.9) brought his A-game back out on display against Orlando City SC, and has a very favorable schedule coming up, including playing at home against the New England Revolution, and then back-to-back matches against the Chicago Fire. If Michael de Leeuw ($9.0) can recover from his ankle injury quickly, then he would also be a good option – he notched three goals in his last three matches prior to the injury.

Who are you bringing in to prepare for the crazy bye week in Round 32? Let us know in the comments below!
