Ex-Rapids Homegrown Shane O'Neill signs with Dutch club NAC Breda

Shane O'Neill in action for the Colorado Rapids

US youth international and former Colorado Rapids defender Shane O’Neill found a new home on Wednesday, when it was announced that the 22-year-old center back has signed with Dutch second-division outfit NAC Breda on a season-long loan from Cypriot club Apollon Limassol.

O’Neill played with Colorado from 2012 until last July, when he transferred to Apollon Limassol. He’s yet to play for the Cypriot club, spending the 2015-16 season on loan to Belgian club Mouscron-Peruwelz and English lower-division side Cambridge United.

A native of Boulder, Colorado, O’Neill is an experienced youth international, having impressed in four appearances at the 2015 Toulon Tournament in France and played a pair of matches at the 2013 Under-20 World Cup in Turkey. He started his Rapids career brightly, making 26 appearances – including 24 starts – in their run to the playoffs in 2013, but eventually fell out of favor, appearing just four times in 2015 before leaving Colorado.

NAC Breda finished third in the Dutch second-division last season, their first in the lower league after 15 consecutive seasons in the Eredivisie.
