Former USMNT stalwart Oguchi Onyewu trains with New England Revolution

The New England Revolution have given up more goals than any other team in MLS.

Now it appears they’re looking for some much-needed defensive reinforcements.

On Monday, team staff writer Jeff Lemieux reported that center back Oguchi Onyewu is training with the Revs ahead of a big home clash with the Colorado Rapids on Saturday (7:30 pm ET, MLS LIVE).

American soccer fans are plenty familiar with Onyewu, who came through the youth ranks with the likes of Landon Donovan and DaMarcus Beasley and was a key player for the US national team through the 2006 and 2010 World Cup cycles.

But the 6-foot-4 defender known as “Gooch” has since dealt with injury troubles and hasn’t played a first-team match in nearly two years.

Onyewu has never played in MLS, spending his entire club career overseas. But he did train with New York City FC early in the 2015 season after getting released from English club Charlton Athletic.

Despite having given up a league-high 47 goals and going winless in their last six, the Revolution are still in the playoff race, currently five points below the red line in the East with eight games left in the season.
