The second week of Barclays Premier League brought more action from USMNT stars and prospects – on Sunday morning, in the same game.
Sunderland hosted Middlesbrough at the Stadium of Light to a losing 1-2 result for the home side. But they enjoyed at least one bright spot: the home debut, and another start, by 20-year-old Lynden Gooch, a California native and potential senior USMNT prospect.
Gooch, a US U-20 veteran, debuted for Sunderland last week during the team’s opening-day visit to Manchester City. His performance at home Sunday proved why he might deserve a look for the US senior squad, troubling the visitors early and battling for – and winning – possession throughout the match.
Meanwhile, Middlesbrough boasted the debut of goalkeeper Brad Guzan, fresh off a transfer from Aston Villa.
