New York Red Bulls sign Austrian midfielder Daniel Royer from Danish club

The New York Red Bulls completed the transfer of Austrian midfielder Daniel Royer from Danish club FC Midtjylland on Wednesday, the club announced.

A 26-year-old who has primarily played as a winger during his career, Royer spent one season with Midtyjylland, scoring two goals and notching three assists in 36 appearances in the Danish Superliga, UEFA Champions League, Europa League and cup competition.


“We’re pleased to add Daniel to our team,” Red Bulls sporting director Ali Curtis said in a statement released by the club. “He’s a talented player that is in the prime of his career. His ability to play different positions in the midfield gives us both quality and depth. Daniel is a very intelligent and mature young man, and we look forward to him joining the club.”


Prior to moving to Denmark, Royer spent time in the Austrian Bundesliga and German first and second divisions. He saw the majority of his action in his native Austria, recording 15 goals and 20 assists in three total seasons with SV Ried and Austria Vienna. He moved from Ried to German club Hannover in the July 2011, appearing three times with Hannover and playing 26 games on loan with FC Koln in the second division in the 2012-13 campaign before moving to Austria Vienna.


Royer has six career appearances with the Austrian national team, with all of his caps coming in 2011.


The Red Bulls will be in action on Wednesday night, when they’ll host Antigua Guatemala FC in their 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League opener (8 pm ET; UDN). New York will return to MLS action on Sunday, when they’ll take on the LA Galaxy at StubHub Center (9:30 pm ET; FS1 in the US, MLS LIVE in Canada)
