Dwyer-to-Olympiacos rumors resurface? Sort of, but also maybe not

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – And you wonder why they call it Silly Season.

The "Dom Dwyer to Greece" rumor surfaced again on Friday, when an image and caption on the cover of a Greek newspaper claimed that Sporting Kansas City had agreed to sell the center forward to Olympiacos CFP for 4.5 million euros during the summer transfer window.

A small headshot of Dwyer on the front page is captioned, in Greek: "Agreement for Dwyer. For 4.5m euros, it was done with the star of Kansas. The player is expected to say 'yes.' The English wants Champions League and is waiting…”

But as the Web site The Blue Testament first pointed out, the story linked to that image has nothing to do with Dwyer, who leads Sporting with 10 goals on the season and is only the second player in club history to record double-digit goal totals in MLS play in three consecutive seasons.

Instead, it dealt with a report that Olympiacos – one of Greece's traditional powers – had offered Serie A side Palermo 4.5 million euros for former Columbus Crew SC defender Giancarlo Gonzalez

Now, the print edition might say something different – but even if it does, Sporting manager Peter Vermes took the same tack on Friday as he did when the rumor first surfaced at the beginning of this week.

"I don't know who's giving you that, but it's not true," said Vermes, whose club hosts the Portland Timbers on Sunday (2 p.m. ET, FOX, MLS Live in Canada) in a key Western Conference matchup. "It's not true."
