Sporting Kansas City sign first-round SuperDraft pick Emmanuel Appiah

Sporting Kansas City signed 22-year-old midfielder Emmanuel Appiah on Tuesday, the club announced.


A University of Cincinnati product, Appiah was selected with by the Colorado Rapids with the No. 15 overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft in January. He played two matches on loan with USL club Charlotte Independence before parting ways with Colorado on June 30.


“Emmanuel is a player who we scouted in college and watched closely at the Combine,” Sporting KC manager Peter Vermes said in a statement released by the club. “He is a young midfielder who possesses a lot of qualities that our staff likes and we look forward to integrating him into our system.”


Born in Ghana but raised in Westerville, Ohio, Appiah spent five years at the University of Cincinnati, recording seven goals and 13 assists in 65 appearances for the Bearcats.
