Reports: Uruguayan center back Jose Aja headed to Orlando City

Jose Aja - Nacional Uruguay

Defensive help might soon be on the way for Orlando City.

According to reports, Uruguayan center back Jose Aja is set to join Orlando City in the near future. Aja is currently training with Uruguayan outfit Nacional, and head coach Martin Lasarte, recently told a radio show that he was not counting on having Aja for the upcoming season because the 23-year-old defender is "headed to MLS."

Aja began his professional career with Nacional back during the 2014-15 season. He later joined fellow top-flight club Racing, for whom he made 12 starts during the recently-concluded campaign.

The Orlando Sentinel, citing an unnamed source, reported that Orlando City is in negotiations with Aja, but said the club would not confirm that assertion.

Orlando City, who on Tuesday released midfielder Adrian Winter for personal reasons, could certainly use some defensive reinforcements. The Eastern Conference side has conceded 29 goals in 16 games thus far this season, and is currently not in the playoff picture.

Only three teams have surrendered more goals than Orlando this season: New York City FC, the Vancouver Whitecaps and the New England Revolution, who each have given up 31 goals.
