Erick "Cubo" Torres named to Mexico's Olympic preliminary roster

Erick "Cubo" Torres - Houston Dynamo - Dribbles upfield

It hasn't been the greatest year with the Houston Dynamo for Eric "Cubo'' Torres, but he does have a shot at fulfilling a dream that many people have growing up: participating in the Olympics.

On Tuesday, Torres, 23, was one of the 25 players announced to Mexico's preliminary roster ahead of their trip to Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympics. 18 of the 25 players will be selected for the final roster, to go along with three overage players.

Torres will be battling for a spot along the forward line with two Chivas teammates, Marco Bueno and Angel Zaldivar, Carlos Fierro (Queretaro) and Alejandro Diaz (Necaxa).

During qualifying, Torres scored three goals in four games as Mexico beat Honduras in the final of the tournament. Torres scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the semifinal against Canada, as El Tri qualified for the Olympics against their North American counterparts.

Torres has made just seven appearances (two starts) this season with the Dynamo, failing to score in 225 minutes.
