DC United 0, Seattle Sounders FC 2 | 2016 MLS Match Recap

In the final game for both teams before the Copa America Centenario break, Seattle Sounders FC struck for two late goals four minutes apart to end their three-game losing streak with a 2-0 victory over D.C. United at RFK Stadium on Wednesday.

The win was the fourth straight for Sounders FC over United, and extended their unbeaten streak against D.C. to six games (5-0-1). For D.C., the frustration against their Pacific Northwest opponent continues to rise: They've failed to score against Seattle in their last six meetings.

Jordan Morris, in the 79th minute, and Joevin Jones, in the 83rd, struck late to capture all three points for Seattle in what had been a largely dull affair ā€“ side from a couple bits of magic by United's Luciano Acosta.

D.C.'s Bill Hamid was the much busier goalkeeper, but seemed to have everything under control until Jones struck a ball that Hamid dove to save; the rebound ended up at the foot of Morris, who drove it home for the eventual game-winner.

Box Score

Three Things

  1. GREEN MONSTER You have to go back five years – to May 4, 2011 – for the last time D.C. United beat Seattle. And that, by the way, was the last time United scored a goal against the Sounders. They have failed to score in their last six games against Seattle, with their scoreless drought against the Rave Green now up to 578 minutes. It's tough to win that way.

  2. THE SHOTS HAVE TO BE ON TARGET: Of course, you need to put the shots on target if you want to score. The scoresheet says United outshot their visitors 15-14 in the game. There's just one problem: Of their 15 shots, only one was actually on target. Seattle goalie Stefan Frei was required to make a total of one save in the game. In contrast, Seattle hit the target eight times, including once that forced a Bill Hamid save and created the rebound that led to the first goal.

  3. NO INSTANT OFFENSE THIS TIME: In his first game for D.C. United, Alhaji Kamara scored the game-winning goal 33 seconds after coming on as a substitute. In his second game, Kamara entered the game in the 81st minute with United down, 1-0, in hopes he could make magic again. He couldn't.
