Vancouver Whitecaps 1, Houston Dynamo 1 | 2016 MLS Match Recap

DaMarcus Beasley gave the Houston Dynamo a first-half lead, but Octavio Rivero equalized for the Vancouver Whitecaps early in the second half as both teams settled for a 1-1 draw Saturday at BC Place in Vancouver.

Houston jumped ahead in the 20th minute on Beasley’s first goal of the season. Alex threaded a perfect ball to Beasley, who cut back on a sliding Tim Parker before lifting the ball into the net from eight yards out.

Both teams were reduced to 10 men when Alex and Pedro Morales were given straight red cards for an altercation three minutes from halftime.

The Whitecaps leveled in the 52nd minute on Rivero’s second goal of the season. Cristian Techera’s corner was flicked on and Rivero latched onto the ball and sent a half volley inside the near post to tie the match at one.

Things heated up again with a little less than a quarter hour remaining. First Mauro Manotas headed off the crossbar from the edge of the six and then Tyler Deric did well to parry away a Techera opportunity before diving to knock away a Kekuta Manneh cross for a corner.

Not to be outdone by his rival goalkeeper, David Ousted made a stunning save four minutes from full time, tipping a David Horst header off the crossbar.

Three Things

  1. MIXED BAG FOR ALEX: The Brazilian played a spectacular ball to Beasley to give the visitors a 1-0 lead on 20 minutes, but he would leave the match in the 42nd minute when he and Pedro Morales each received straight red cards.
  2. ROCKY ROAD FOR DYNAMO: Houston’s winless streak away from home extends to seven games. The Dynamo are one of seven MLS teams still searching for three road points.
  3. ’CAPS HOME FORM CONTINUES: Conversely, the Whitecaps have just one loss in seven games at BC Place this year with 15 out of a possible 24 points won at home. Vancouver’s lone loss came in Week 1 against the Montreal Impact.
