The Portland Timbers may be relying on backup goalkeeper Jake Gleeson a bit longer than initially thought.

After Adam Kwarasey tore a ligament in his hand on April 16, coach Caleb Porter told reporters the starting goalkeeper was expected be out at least four weeks. But now, five weeks later, it appears that Kwarasey will be out significantly longer.

Porter told the Oregonian ahead of Sunday’s 2-1 loss to NYCFC that Kwarasey still has another several weeks of recovery.

“He’s going to be back early July,” Porter told the Oregonian from team training.

Kwarasey’s injury is just one in a string that the Timbers are still dealing with. Forward Darren Mattocks and right back Alvas Powell both aren’t expected to be game-ready until mid-June, Porter said.

“We’ve had 11 injuries. Everyone’s good at finding stats – might want to find that stat,” Porter said. “We’ve had 11 injuries in 11 games and nine of the injuries have been to starting players. That is a factor.”

That number pushed up to 12 injuries to 10 starters on Sunday – striker Fanendo Adi exited the match in the 58th minute with what Porter later told reporters was a hamstring injury. Adi would undergo an MRI to determine how serious it was, Porter said.
