Charlton Alonso wins Allstate “Good Hands” top goalkeeper award

Charlton Alonso, a 13 year-old goalkeeper from Paramus, New Jersey, has won the Allstate “Good Hands” top goalkeeper - El Portero Allstate award.  Alonso has been invited to join one of the New York Red Bulls Academy teams. Alonso was initially discovered at the Sueño MLS Red Bulls tryouts.

The announcement was made today on Univision Deportes’ “Republica Deportiva,” which has chronicled the competition in a “reality show within a show” format.

In addition, the top three Sueño MLS 2016 - Presented by Allstate Insurance Company finalists were named: Carlos Amaya (LA Galaxy), Arturo Ernand (New York Red Bulls) and Alan Gaytan (Portland Timbers) were chosen from the national final that took place in Carson, California. The ultimate winner will be announced live on Republica Deportiva on May 22 at 3 pm ET.

“It feels amazing, I am very grateful for it,” said Alonso. “This means everything to me. It shows me that if I keep putting in the work, I’ll be getting results like this. Now I’ll continue to be aggressive, continue talking and continue to be a leader on the field, which I think that set me apart from the other goalkeepers.”

The Allstate “Good Hands” top goalkeeper - El Portero Allstate winner was chosen from the three goalkeeper finalists who were in Southern California earlier in the month for four days of competition and mentoring by top soccer goalkeeping legend Adolfo Rios.

“Alonso possess great speed, strength and his reaction to the ball was outstanding. We also took his age into consideration, we think when he is in a formal team setting he will develop a higher skill level. He will have a great future in the MLS Academy,” said Rios.

Celebrating its historic 10th year, Sueño MLS – Presented by Allstate Insurance Company was staged by three Major League Soccer teams, including first-time host Portland Timbers, as well as returning hosts LA Galaxy and the New York Red Bulls. Up to 400 tryout spots were made available in each city.
