The 2016 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup got underway on Wednesday, with lower-tier teams from all across the country competing in a dramatic first round.
Of the 22 games on Wednesday evening, four were settled after extra time, while two more went all the way to a penalty shootout. The latter list included one of the marquee games of the round, an all-Michigan clash between the Michigan Bucks and fan-owned Detroit City FC, which DCFC took on a 4-3 shootout win.
Three MLS sides also saw their U-23 affiliates participate in the first round, though the Seattle Sounders U-23s were the only ones to pull out a victory, a 3-1 extra time win over California amateur side Outbreak FC. The New York Red Bulls U-23s fell 2-1 to three-time champs New York Pancyprian Freedoms, while the Portland Timbers U-23s fell 2-0 to another California side, La Maquina
The Open Cup is an annual knockout tournament open all US clubs, amateur or professional, that was first played in 1914. Sporting Kansas City are the defending champions (pictured above) after defeating the Philadelphia Union in a penalty shootout in the 2015 final. The tournament winners qualify for the following year's CONCACAF Champions League.
