Report: Vancouver's BC Place to host Canada-El Salvador World Cup qualifier

Canada fans - BC Place - World Cup qualifying

Canada are reportedly heading back to Vancouver for the final match of the semifinal round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying, as Sportsnet’s Irfaan Gaffar reported on Monday that Les Rouges will host their Sept. 6 qualifier against El Salvador at BC Place.

Canada have held both of their previous two qualifiers of the round at BC Place, drawing 20,108 fans for their win over Honduras last November before a record crowd of 54,798 turned up for their loss against Mexico last month.

Canada had played most of their recent home internationals at BMO Field in Toronto, including all three World Cup qualifying matches in the 2014 cycle and World Cup qualifiers in 2015 against Dominica and Belize. Montreal and Edmonton also hosted big Canadian matches over the years; before November, the men's national team's last home game in Vancouver was a World Cup qualifier in 1997.

Canada are currently in third place in Group A of the semifinal round of CONCACAF qualifying, trailing Honduras on goal differential. They’ll face Honduras in San Pedro Sula on Sept. 2 and will likely need at least a draw in Central America in order to have a realistic shot at advancing to their first Hexagonal since the 1998 World Cup cycle.
