New York City FC and the Chicago Fire combined for seven goals in their first meeting of the season in Week 1, but neither team was able to find the breakthrough in a tight affair at Yankee Stadium on Sunday night.
NYCFC and the Fire played to a scoreless draw that saw both team create chances, but fail to convert. The Fire looked to have taken the lead at the hour mark when rookie defender Jonathan Campbell headed the ball into the back of the net on a set piece, but match official Mark Geiger waved it off after consulting with one of his linesmen.
New York City FC did not have a goal disallowed, but did have more opportunities. David Villa saw two good looks in the first half denied by Matt Lampson, and another in the second stanza on a run down the right that was also saved by the Fire goalkeeper.
The result moves both NYCFC and the Fire to 1-1-3 on the year. NYCFC are still winless at home this season, while the Fire have extended their unbeaten run to four games.
