US Under-17s beat France to win Montaigu Tournament title

US U-17 national team - celebrating Tournament of Montaigu win, 2016

The US senior national team seem to be in the midst of an existential crisis, but the Under-17s don’t seem to be bothered, defeating hosts France 3-2 on Monday in the final of the 44th International Tournament of Montaigu. It marks the first time the US has won the tournament since 1992.

The US got on the board first, taking an early lead when forward Tim Weah – the son of legendary forward George Weah – found the back of the net. France stormed back to take a 2-1 lead with two goals late in the first half, but US midfielder George Acosta stole the show in the second, scoring twice to give the US the title.

Acosta finished the tournament with six goals in four games for the US, who drew England and Brazil and beat Russia in group play to qualify for Monday’s final.
