MLS Power Rankings, Week 3: Sporting secure No. 1 spot after perfect start

BIGGEST MOVERS: Philadelphia +7 spots  | Columbus -6 spots

1

LAST WEEK: 4

HIGH: 1 | LOW: 11

Can't argue with nine points from three games, even if the attack has been, at times, pretty stagnant. All that really matters is finding a way to win, which Sporting have done.

Latest result: Won vs. Toronto, 1-0

Next MLS match: April 2 vs. Real Salt Lake

2

LAST WEEK: 5

HIGH: 2 | LOW: 5

They clearly took a mulligan for the 5-0 loss to Houston two weeks ago, and were defensively dominant against the previously rampant Impact. We think that's what this team truly is.

Latest result: Won vs. Montreal, 2-0

Next MLS match: Saturday at D.C. United

3

LAST WEEK: 2

HIGH: 1 | LOW: 3

Came charging back from a 2-0 deficit to pick up a home point, which is becoming the norm for this group. The Timbers always make tough sledding of it, but nobody is as reliably dangerous in the last 15 minutes of the game.

4

LAST WEEK: 1

HIGH: 1 | LOW: 8

Looked vulnerable defensively and lost the plot entirely in possession and attack. The switch away from the 4-3-3 to a 4-2-3-1 was not, as it turns out, advisable.

Latest result: Lost at Dallas, 2-0

Next MLS match: April 2 at Seattle

5

LAST WEEK: 3

HIGH: 3 | LOW: 6

Not a bad loss by any stretch. Through three games it's pretty clear that TFC have made a significant step forward defensively – that that their offseason maneuvering was justifiably applauded.

Latest result: Lost at Sporting KC, 1-0

Next MLS match: April 2 at Colorado (TSN)

6

LAST WEEK: 7

HIGH: 6 | LOW: 9

Going up a man was a good thing, but moving Gyasi Zardes back to forward was even better. The Galaxy look like a different team when he's occupying defenders in the 18 and taking attention away from Robbie Keane et al.

Latest result: Won vs. San Jose, 3-1

Next MLS match: April 2 at Vancouver (TSN2)

7

LAST WEEK: 9

HIGH: 7 | LOW: 15

Tough to have too much confidence in a team that just can't stop giving up late goals, but the Power Rankings Politburo loves to watch the front three of Joao Plata, Yura Movsisyan and Burrito Martinez. If they can add a quality defender, RSL will be a problem for everybody in this league.

Latest result: Drew at Portland, 2-2

Next MLS match: April 2 at Sporting KC

8

LAST WEEK: 6

HIGH: 6 | LOW: 14

Took a bad red card, then took a loss for their troubles. The Quakes are what they are, and need a full cohort – including Clarence Goodson, who missed this game – to be a playoff team out West.

Latest result: Lost at LA Galaxy, 3-1

Next MLS match: April 2 vs. D.C. United

9

LAST WEEK: 12

HIGH: 4 | LOW: 12

Finally rediscovered their offense thanks to some heroics from Felipe and toughness from Mike Grella. Can't score four every week, though – and with the defense falling apart, they may very well have to.

Latest result: Won vs. Houston, 4-3

10

LAST WEEK: 17

HIGH: 11 | LOW: 19

Absolutely dominated the Revs by playing through C.J. Sapong. His ability to hold the ball up, link useful passes, and create for his wingers takes a ton of pressure off the Union midfield.

Latest result: Won vs. New England, 3-0

Next MLS match: April 2 at Chicago

11

LAST WEEK: 10

HIGH: 10 | LOW: 17

Even before this weekend's festivities the Dynamo were this year's must-watch team. Their attack is legitimately fearsome in the open field, and the defense is such a mess that they can concede some stunning goals.

Latest result: Lost at New York, 4-3

Next MLS match: Saturday at Vancouver

12

LAST WEEK: 11

HIGH: 5 | LOW: 12

Getting three points on the road is always a good thing, even if it comes courtesy of... ahem... some debatable officiating. The 'Caps aren't playing like we thought they would, but at least they have points on the board.

Latest result: Won at Seattle, 2-1

Next MLS match: Saturday vs. Houston (TSN)

13

LAST WEEK: 15

HIGH: 12 | LOW: 15

Five points from three games really isn't a bad haul, even if two of them were at home. Cyle Larin has earned some serious Player of the Month buzz as without him, OCSC are probably both goal-less and pointless.

Latest result: Won at NYCFC, 1-0

Next MLS match: April 3 vs. Portland (FS1)

14

LAST WEEK: 8

HIGH: 3 | LOW: 14

Where has the offense gone? One of last year's more entertaining attacking teams has produced just two goals and one point through three games, and looked completely lost in trying to break down Chicago's five-man backline.

Latest result: Drew vs. Chicago, 0-0

Next MLS match: April 2 at Dallas

15

LAST WEEK: 14

HIGH: 10 | LOW: 15

Even before the red card the Revs were the second-best team out there on Sunday. The right side of their defense is a disaster at the moment, and it's unclear what the best way of fixing it happens to be.

Latest result: Lost at Philadelphia, 3-0

Next MLS match: Saturday at New York City

16

LAST WEEK: 13

HIGH: 12 | LOW: 16

They were more inventive and attack-minded than Orlando City, but lacked that last bit of quality in the final third. Four points through three games is a good enough start to the Patrick Vieira era, given the turmoil of this offseason.

Next MLS match: Saturday vs. New England

17

LAST WEEK: 16

HIGH: 7 | LOW: 17

They're getting no creativity out of midfield, and no longer have an Obafemi Martins-level No. 9 to mask that deficiency. Nobody should be shocked if this team makes a big move (or two) in the next couple of weeks.

Latest result: Lost vs. Vancouver, 2-1

Next MLS match: April 2 vs. Montreal

18

LAST WEEK: 18

HIGH: 18 | LOW: 20

Nothing wrong with a road point, even if it came on a gift. Colorado won't generate a lot of excitement with their play, but they've looked very solid defensively thus far.

Latest result: Drew at D.C. United, 1-1

Next MLS match: April 2 vs. Toronto

19

LAST WEEK: 19

HIGH: 13 | LOW: 19

Fabian Espindola's goal off of Zac MacMath's flub spared some blushes for D.C. Both of their goals – two in three games – have come off of epic blunders from their opponents, which tells a story about United's inability to create good chances for themselves.

Latest result: Drew vs. Colorado, 1-1

Next MLS match: Saturday vs. Dallas

20

LAST WEEK: 20

HIGH: 18 | LOW: 20

Ran out of ideas pretty quickly against Columbus, though at least the defense looked good. Jonathan Campbell has been one of the pleasant March surprises around the league, and seems to be an important building block going forward.

Latest result: Drew at Columbus, 0-0

Next MLS match: April 2 vs. Philadelphia
