Portland mascot Timber Joey has gear stolen, but TV crew saves the day

Timber Joey - 2015 - cutting the log

Timber Joey got a bit of a scare over the weekend, as the Portland Timbers mascot had some gear stolen out of his car during Portland’s 2-2 draw with Real Salt Lake on Saturday night – but it was recovered on Sunday by a local TV reporter and photographer.

The mascot, whose actual name is Joey Webber, posted to his Facebook page on Sunday morning that his helmet, custom jersey, suspenders and other gear was stolen out of his car on Saturday night. The post was seen by KATU reporter Cory Marshall and photographer Eric Williams, who spotted a man wearing the helmet and jersey while on assignment in Portland on Sunday night.

Marshall and Williams got in touch with Timber Joey, eventually returning his gear to him later on Sunday night.

Kudos to KATU’s Marshall and Williams, who turned a bummer of a story into a heartwarming one for the second-place finisher in the recently completed MLS Mascot Mania play-in round. Mascot Mania will continue later this week, with our very own Elite Eight.
