As US national team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann mulls over his roster ahead of this month's World Cup qualifiers against Guatemala, there's a chance a could be without one of his most in-form players, Borussia Monchengladbach winger Fabian Johnson.
Per Gladbach's official team website, Johnson picked up a groin strain in the team's 2-1 loss to Schalke 04 in Bundesliga play on Friday and is "set for a spell on the sidelines." Johnson was substituted in the 70th minute of the game.
There are no details yet on the length of any potential absence.
Johnson, 28, is enjoying a career year as a regular fixture in the Gladbach lineup. Through 22 league games, he has scored six goals, assisted three more and has 59 chances created. He also picked up two goals and an assist across five games in 2015-16 UEFA Champions League group stage play.
For the US national team, the versatile Johnson has 42 caps and a pair of goals. Though he has primarily played on the left wing for his club this season, he can also play on the other side of the midfield as well as at fullback, where he has often been deployed for the US.
The US will play a pair of World Cup qualifiers, first at Guatemala on March 25 (10:30 pm ET, beIN Sports) and then at Columbus' MAPFRE Stadium again versus Los Chapines on March 29 (7 pm ET, ESPN2).
